Guidelines To Avoiding Sin

Here are a few guidelines to avoiding sin.   In the bible, when we read the book of Genesis, we see that Man fell by choice.   God told Adam that he could freely eat of all the trees in the garden except one.

“And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, ‘Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” (Genesis 2:16-17)

The tempter in the form of a serpent lied to Eve and Eve believed the lie.

“Then the serpent said to the woman, ‘You will not surely die.  For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.’” (Genesis 3:4-5)

The tempter is the father of lies, deceiving and seducing us to sin.  This is what Jesus says about the tempter.

“He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him.  When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.” (John 8:44)

The Lie questions God’s Word, giving our opinion absolute authority.  Our opinions are easy prey to Satan’s deception.  Here are some guidelines to avoiding sin:

Do not challenge God’s Word.  Ask instead, What does God’s Word mean to me?  How can I apply it to my life?

Suspect urgings that come from carnal appetites, visual enticements that invite acquisition, and things that tug at personal ambition.

“For all that is in the world — the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life — is not of the Father but is of the world.  And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.”

Have a blessed day.
